DeGroot Fine Art was pleased to present a solo exhibition of Hope Wang’s work and collaborate on a program activation of the space. Smellbinding was a perfume swap and artist networking event that, inspired by the shared love of fragrance between the artist Hope Wang and DFA owner Jaime DeGroot. During their first meeting at her artist studio, their conversation sparked when they discovered a mutual passion for perfumes. Guests were encouraged to bring a fragrance to trade, or simply come to explore new scents and connect with new people.
Wang’s work delves into themes of memory and place, often using color, light, and textures as a key element in the exploration of past experiences and the emotions they evoke. She takes delight in the sloppy traces of human activity around industrial spaces, as reinsertions of the body into a landscape increasingly more dissociated from it. Similarly, smell is also a tangible link to the way we connect to people, places, and experiences.
